WINE OF THE MONTH- JANUARY

To get the year of wines off to a strong start, I though it might be appropriate to feature what I consider to be one of the best values in recent memory. This wine rang in at #82 on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2008, sells for a flat $10 and should cellar well into this new decade. It’s versatile as an every day table wine thanks to its affordability, but will also stand up to some of Australia’s best Shiraz with time.

D’Arenberg The Stump Jump Shiraz McLaren Vale 2008, 89 Points, $10, 5000 Cases Imported

Vivid, racy mouthfeel of ripe blackberry, dark plum and black cherry backed by vanilla bean, peppery spice and a burst of chalky mineral through the impressive finish. Chewy tannins linger.
