I recall frantically trying to meander through confusing roads (well, at least to me) fearing that I would fail to arrive at Seghesio Vineyards before they closed. Being one of the oldest and most famous producers in Sonoma, Seghesio was high on my list of places to visit. Thankfully, my navigational skills didn’t fail me and we made it there with a half and hour to spare, and I was able to taste a handful of wonderful Red Zinfandels. I recently had a chance to re-taste this widely available zin, and actually was even more impressed than I was at the winery. Must have been the full pour…
SEGHESIO ZINFANDEL SONOMA COUNTY 2006, 89 POINTS, $20, 62,000 Cases Produded
Dark, jammy aromas with a soft, perfumey mouthfeel of wild berry fruit flavors. Blackberry, pomegrante and hints of blueberry, oak and light spice coat the palate. Plush and loaded with fruit through the medium length, hints of alcohol linger with light raisiny characteristics, full and fruity initially and port-like at the finish.
